About Trauma Disorders
Trauma is generally defined as the emotional response to a terrible event such as a sexual assault, a bad accident or a natural disaster, but a person may be traumatized by any event that affects him or her in a physically or emotionally threatening way. People may respond to trauma with fear, anger, denial, depression, anxiety, a feeling of hopelessness, irritability, difficulty concentrating and even physical symptoms such as headaches, fatigue, stomach issues and sweating. These reactions may last for a short while or become a long-term problem, or they may develop into post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
There are several types of trauma:
- Acute trauma results from a onetime event, such as rape or kidnapping.
- Chronic trauma is caused by stressful events that happen repeatedly, such as ongoing abuse, bullying or domestic violence.
- Complex trauma results from exposure to multiple events, such as a combination of neglect and abuse.
- Secondary trauma occurs when a person exhibits symptoms of trauma as a result of close contact with a person who has experienced a traumatic event.
